DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD 2021

 

COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON DAY OF THE AFRICA CHILD IN ADO-EKITI AND IKERE-EKITI, EKITI STATE.

THEME: 30 YEARS AFTER THE ADOPTION OF THE CHARTER: ACCELERATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AGENDA 2040 FOR AN AFRICA FIT FOR CHILDREN.

Day of the African child is celebrated every 16th of June yearly. In 1976 In Soweto, South Africa, thousands of black schoolchildren took to the streets to protest about the inferior quality of their education and to demand their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of them were shot down; and in the two weeks of protest that followed, more than a hundred people were killed and more than a thousand injured. To honour their courage and in memory of those killed, in 1991 the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) established the DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD.

Today June 16, 2021, staffs of GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE took it upon 

themselves to commemorate the day with the staffs and student C.A.C comprehensive high school Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti.

The staffs arrived the school premises at exactly 7:10am also the media man was on ground to cover the programme after which we met  with the principal and we are warmly welcome by her and instruct the school vice principal to led us to the assembly ground. We met the student with the staffs on the assembly ground after their devotion we are invited to address the student. We then gave a brief introduction about GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE and what we do. Emmanuel Subair the programme officer then enlightens the student about DAY OF THE AFRICA CHILD.

Also Miss. Adebisi Olamiposi monitoring and evaluation officer enlightens the student on the topic of the day ‘PROTECTING CHILDREN AGAINST CHILD ABUSE AND CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE’. Explaining to them WHAT IS ABUSE? Reading from her prepared research on the topic stating that ABUSE is the improper usage or treatment of a thing, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. Abuse can come in many forms, such as: physical or verbal maltreatment, injury, assault violation, rape, unjust practices, crimes, or other types of aggression.  

WHAT IS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE?

Child sexual abuse is a form of child abuse that includes sexual activity with a minor. And explained who minors are. A child cannot consent to any form of sexual activity.  When a perpetrator engages with a child this way, they are committing a crime that can have lasting effects on the victim for years. Listing forms of child sexual abuse which  include, deliberate exhibition or exposing oneself to a minor, Fondling, Intercourse e.t.c.

Miss. Olamiposi Adebisi also made mention of the physical and behavioral signs to know if someone is sexually abuse. She further explain to the student things to know to prevent themselves from been sexually abuse. She stated the following which are:

Ø  Be properly informed about sexual abuse, that is no one should touch your private parts and never be force to touch someone else private part. And if that happens inform your parent or guardians.

Ø  Always ensure you stay in a safe and protective environment. You don’t have to stay alone once you suspected the place is not safe and don’t visit a friend place alone especially when.

Ø  Have a safety language or signs to alert people if you suspect sexual abuse.  

After the sensitization, the student and teacher were delighted about the topic treated and the staffs of Global support for kids initiative met with the principal of the school Mrs. G.F OMOLE to appreciate her for the opportunity given to us and also had an interview with her.

 

Also, after first presentation at C.A.C comprehensive high school Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, the staffs of GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE went to Ikere-Ekiti to commemorate the day with the staffs and students of femTECH ACADEMY, SECONDARY SCHOOL IKERE-EKITI, EKITI STATE. The staffs arrived the school premises at exactly 10:30am also the media man was on ground to cover the programme. On getting to the place, we meet with the students and all guest participants getting ready for the programme. The programme started at exactly 11:00am with the opening prayer made by one of the invited parent, after which the master of ceremony took to the stage by inviting the guest of honor to the high table, In which the staffs of Global support for kids initiative were also invited.  The principal gave his speech by declaring the event open after which Emmanuel Subair the programme officer then gave them a brief introduction about GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE and what we do, also enlighten them about DAY OF THE AFRICA CHILD.

The debate competition then took place between two schools, which is the host school femTECH and the guest school, ikere high school while the debate was coordinated by the guest of high table. After several point from both debaters they host school won with 234 point while ikere high school scored 193 point.  They were all given prizes for participating. Also there was poem recitation as part of the programme activity. 

Furthermore, some students participate in beauty pageant, looking out for who will emerge as MR & MISS. DAC 2021. After so many dancing, parading and questions MR. & MISS. DAC 2021 was crowned. After that one of the guests of honour gave a talk about morals and building a career. He explains to the student on choosing a career.

Also Miss. Adebisi Olamiposi monitoring and evaluation officer of Global support for kids initiative talked on the theme for this year DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD.  THEMED: 30 YEARS AFTER THE ADOPTION OF THE CHARTER: ACCELERATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AGENDA 2040 FOR AN AFRICA FIT FOR CHILDREN. She took her time to dwell much on the agenda propagate by the African committee of expert on the rights and welfare of the child (ACERWC) which is “Agenda 2040: Fostering an Africa fit for children”.

She explained to the entire audience each of the aspirations and what each of them tend to achieve by the year 2040.she made mentioned that the Agenda sets out ten solid aspirations to be achieved by the year 2040 and provides brief backgrounds with a deep insight on specific issues.

The ten aspirations are the following:

  • Aspiration 1: The African Children’s Charter, as supervised by the African Children’s Committee, provides an effective continental framework for advancing children’s rights
  • Aspiration 2: An effective child-friendly national legislative, policy and institutional framework is in place in all Member States
  • Aspiration 3: Every child’s birth and other vital statistics are registered
  • Aspiration 4: Every child survives and has a healthy childhood
  • Aspiration 5: Every child grows up well-nourished and with access to the basic necessities of life
  • Aspiration 6: Every child benefits fully from quality educatio00n
  • Aspiration 7: Every child is protected against violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse
  • Aspiration 8: Children benefit from a child-sensitive criminal system
  • Aspiration 9: Every child is free from the impact of armed conflicts and other disasters or emergency situations
  • Aspiration 10: African children’s views matter

Following the explanation of the agenda 2040, the school choir came up on stage to render a song that was centered on child’s right.

Miss. Elizabeth odion ,the child protection officer then engage the student in a seminar on child Abuse and child right, she explain further to the student their rights as a child and also educate then on areas they shouldn’t allow people to touch in their body. She lay emphasis on the need to alert people when they suspected any form of child abuse.

After the training /seminar, the students came forward to present a drama which centered on child marriage, they pass a message the audience on dangers of getting a child married, and also the negligent and selfishness of the parent and the punishment that follows was also point out.

After the drama presentation, doughnuts and drinks was served as a menu for the day, pictures were taken and ground was opened for everyone to dance.

 The programme was brought to an end with closing prayer from Miss Elizabeth Odion.













MAY 27TH CHILDREN'S DAY CELEBRATION WITH THE STREET CONNECTED CHILDREN OF ATIKANKAN ADO- EKITI

 COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION WITH THE STREET CHILDREN IN ATIKANKAN ADO EKITI, EKITI STATE, NIGERIA.

HELD ON THE 27TH OF MAY, 2021

Children day is one the national holiday celebration among all the children in Nigeria.  The celebration is mark on 27th of May every year. It is a day set aside to celebrate the future leaders. In other to make the street children to be part of this year celebration, GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE took it upon herself to celebrate and make it a remarkable day for the street children by making the day a colorful one with them and also give them the insight that their general welfare is our greatest concern.

GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE sees a very tangible reason to celebrate these children on this remarkable day because we see them as a normal and regular child we keep at home. It was due to various circumstances in their homes, which make majority of them a victim and pushes them on the street. We realize the society don’t care about their existence. These street children are rejected, neglected and castigated, forgetting that they play a very crucial role in our society. 

 The staff of GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE arrived the venue alongside with the organization media man to cover the event. On getting there, the children were happy to see us, they turned out with excitement, jumping, dancing and full of energy immediately they hear the sound of music played. We can see over them the feeling of being loved and cherished. The children were given a plain card to demonstrate and speak out their mind,

“IF YOU LEAVE US ON THE STREET, WE BECOME HARDEN, BUT IF YOU COME TO OUR AID, WE WILL BE RESCUED”.

“WE ARE LIVING IN HORRENDOUS CIRCUMSTANCE WHERE SKY IS OUR ROOF AND STREET IS OUR LIFE WE CELEBRATE” HAPPY CHILDREN’S DAY TO US”.

WE ARE CASTIGATED, REJECTED AND NEGLECTED, WE ARE PRONE TO BE TEMPTED, BUT WE WONT RELENT. HAPPY CELEBRATION TO US”.

The children were dancing while displaying the plain card, snacks and drinks were served to make the merry for the day. It’s was an awesome moment with the street children as we celebrate with them this year children’s day.

2021 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR STREET CHILDREN (APRIL 12)

 

COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF STREET CONNECTED   CHILDREN OF ATIKANKAN ADO-EKITI, EKITI STATE AND LAFENWA ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE HELD ON THE 12TH OF APRIL, 2021 WITH THE THEME 

 HELP MAKE ACCESS TO SERVICE A REALITY 

 The international day for street children has been celebrated globally since 2012, to recognize the humanity, dignity and defiance of street children in the face of unimaginable hardships.  GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE (ADO –EKITI)   join its   fellow counterpart in celebrating the street children for this year 2021, and also to rally governments and individuals in the state as it is also been celebrated worldwide to work together to ensure their rights are protected no matter who they are and where they live, as part of the activity we urged the masses on   equality and access to essential services by spreading awareness of the rights of children.   The activities for the day started   with movement from the organization office, located at no 3 moferere   street,   Ajilosun. The staffs and four volunteer   together with the disc jockey man left the office   conveyed in the vehicle provided. Our movement started   from moferere, Ajilosun   down to Atikankan where the street children resides. 

On getting there, the children were happy to see us, they turned out in mass dancing and jumping, we thereafter   gave   the children the customized shirt that was designed for them to mark the day activity, we then stormed the street of Ado EKITI, the children were given a plane  card to demonstrate and speak out that they have rights and they are not to be ignored  from Atikankan we enlightened the people that the street children should not be abused and neglected as they are likewise like every other child in the society. We then   moved to OJA OBA, we went into the market sensitizing the people to see the street children as part of the society and not treat them badly. We then moved from the market to ijigbo and all around the axises.  

 After we are through with the street storming ,we returned back to Atikankan, to present to the children the gift item packaged for them alongside food and drinks ,after the food, we are all dance together and make merry.   

Also, while celebrating the street children of ado Ekiti, GSK initiative Abeokuta, Ogun state were not left out, the programme which commence at exactly 09:00am under the pedestrian bridge at Lafenwa Abeokuta and ended at exactly 12:00pm. The activities for the day include dialogue section, and the topic was HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE, in 

which Mrs. Akintunde  of lafenwa police station and Mr. Akinlabi Damilare, the volunteer educate the street children and encourage them that been on the street is not the end for them and there is hope for a better future.  

After the interactive section the children express their grievances written on a plane card and one of the street children called ADEMOLA TAIWO also expressed his grievances about the society not seeing them as part of the society which prompts him to appreciate GSK initiative organization for giving them hope for tomorrow by organizing the party for them. He also pleads to the government to provide a working healthcare system that would enable them to live healthy while on street. The children were also engaged in psychosocial activities with Ludo and Draft game while the music was going on. The children were happy because they were celebrating their day. Doughnuts and soft drinks were served as refreshment in celebrating the event with them.

GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITITIVE ORGANIZED THE FIRST MAIDEN MEETING AND A DAY TRAINING   FOR COMMITTEE OF THE WELFARE OF STREET CHILREN IN OGUN STATE

Global Support for kids Initiative in conjunction with Child Protection Network (CPN) organized a day training for committee members for the welfare of street children held on the 11th February 2021, 9am at cubes hall tantalizer Lafenwa Abeokuta Ogun state. Thirty one participant were in attendance, the Director of Child representing the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Nigerian police both from Lafenwa police station and the railway police station,   NSCDC, market leaders at Lafenwa, Abule Otun community youth leaders [PRO], Enu gada youth secretary, the Media were also present, Representative of OGBC, Splash FM, News Nigeria, City voice.com, blue print media, and the man of the press.

The monitoring and evaluation officer of global support for kids initiative who is also the assistant secretary of CPN Ogun state welcomed all participant to the event, he said   the motive behind the training is to enlighten the committee on modern day approach   in interacting with the street children. He advised that the community after the training should also be responsible for the street children, adding that most of the children who are brutalized have no fault, it is due to the challenges they face in one way or the other that made them so.  Furthermore   he said that parent needs to watch their   children closely, also the   rate at which parent inflict pain on their   children should be reduced by applying another strategy to caution the children.  They should also ensure they show love to their wards,   and also monitor the growth of the girl child, parent should ensure that their children safety is of great importance to them.   He further disclosed that the training will be on a quarterly basis. 

The commissioner of  Ministry of women Affairs, represented by Mr. Akinola Kayode celebrated global support for kids initiative for coming up with such programme, that it will change the members orientation to assist and guide the street children. He identified that broken homes, bad influence are some of the major reason why we see street children around, he advised that members of the committee should identify with the children and integrate them back to the society.

To go further in the training   Mrs. Adeleke   Margret, the general secretary of child protection network Ogun state (CPN)   introduced   the concept of child protection. She explained   on how to protect the children from any form of abuse.In her speech shealso made it cleared that involving in  child protection is a way of  helping our children.After her speech, question was asked by one of the participant which stated that   “if a child is acting strange and feeling reluctant to go to school while his siblings are prepared to go to school,  what corrective approach can be used for such child, Mrs. Adeleke Margret replied that there will be need for such parent  to have quality time with  the  child to enable the child to express himself to the parent, stating that  adequate time and counseling is what such child needs so that the parent can get the true information about what the child  problem is. Afterwards the participant were allowed to exercised themselves with zobo drink and snacks.

After the exercise   Mr.SOLEYE AKINGBADE ALFRE,  Ogun state child protection network (CPN) coordinator took the participant through the component of child protection, and explains the kind of abuse the children may face and its effect on their life and future.  He gave dictionary meaning of   a child and   also what child abuse is. He also explained   expressly on the training which was projected on the screen.

Global support for kids initiative executive director, Mr. Opeyemi Olajide Olowookere then called   via zoom, he appreciated the participant for their presence, and he also urged them to do the task ahead of them effectively.  He furthermore encouraged them that they have a lot to do concerning the welfare   of the street children, and the committee should not relent in their work.

The officer in charge of Juvenile Welfare Centre (JWC), Lafenwa Divisional police station,   Mrs. Abosede  Ajamolya appreciated global support for kids initiative for the training, stating that it will help the committee in performing well in their responsibilities.

Global Support for kids Initiative donate office equipments to Juvenile Welfare Centre (JWC) Lafenwa Police Station, Abeokuta Ogun State.

Global Support for kids Initiative whose street children welfare is of great concern to,  thought it wise to donate some set of office equipments to the Juvenile Welfare Center  (JWC) In other for them to work effectively and comfortably in reaching out to the street children and also to ensure  the children are not been apprehended for unknown crimes. The presentation includes tables, chairs and standing fan, which were handed over to the divisional police officer, Superintendent   Muraina   Ayilara.  The media (Penpushing)   were present to record the activity

       The Executive Director of Global Support for kids Initiative, Opeyemi Olajide Olowookere   added that   it was a result of their support for the street children in reforming them,   as   initiated   the organization to come with the items.   Furthermore  he explained that when the organization came for courtesy visit few days back,  it was observed that they  deserve a more befitting table, chairs and fan to enable them work effectively,  Global Support for kids Initiative then decided to contribute their quota so that collectively the work can be done together, adding that JWC will be seeing the organization staff frequently as they are always on the field with the children three times a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

     Ogun state Child Protection Network (CPN), Sholeye Akingbade Alfred   pointed out that it became necessary to support them as a result of the relationship between the two bodies. The support the organization received from the   police necessitated   the items as it a source of encouraging them to put in more effort in ensuring the welfare of the street children.

The whole police officers appreciated Global Support for kids Initiative for the support,   Mrs. Bosede Ajamolya   the senior officer for Juvenile Welfare Center also expressed her   appreciation, she prayed for the organization   and added that the support  from the organization is of great challenge to them and they are ready to work with Global support for kids initiative In ensuring the welfare of the street children and in the course of their they will ensure that the children are not punished unnecessarily.

GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE SET UP COMMITTEE FOR WELFARE OF STREET CHILDREN.



A committee to protect the welfare of children on the street of Lafenwa was inaugurated by the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in   which Global Support for kids Initiative came up with the idea and sponsored it.  The committee was set up on the 10th of December 2020, at Tantalizer building (cubes international service hall) Lafenwa Ogun state. Thirty three participants were in attendance which comprises Ministry of Women Affairs Ogun State, Child Protection Network, Market Leaders at Lafenwa, Police which included the JWC Lafenwa and Officers from railway station, Community Youth leaders, Road Transport Association, NSCDC, Tricycle Association, Chief Imam, the media (Penpushing, Nigeria News Track, The news Ville, News Nigeria and fresh FM radio), eleven street children were also in attendance.  The main purpose of the committee is to oversee and protect the welfare of children living on the street of Lafenwa Abeokuta Ogun state. This committee will be the guardians of the street children, the children will have access to them,   talk to them about any challenges they are facing on the street. These children are usually accused of unknown crimes because they are vulnerable;   to reduce this, the committee was also set up to ensure that the children are not being punished unnecessarily.

 The Director of Global Support for kids Initiative Mr. Opeyemi Olajide  Olowookere gave the welcome address , he said that building a child is building a nation, thus keeping children off the street would ensure that the community is safe and it will also enable everyone to come together as a family. He said that police,  security agencies, trade unions, motor unions, community leaders, and many others have roles to play in ensuring the welfare of the children, they are being seen as problems presently but they can become great persons in the society tomorrow if they are monitored and well taken care of.  He further said that parental care must be improved upon as some parents and guardians are training children with cruelty, some parent do transfer aggression on the children and beat unnecessarily and  also use abusive  words on the children, all these leads children to run away from home because they end up feeling that the home is not conducive for them and a better option for them is to be on the street, when they are on the street they eventually feel comfortable outside their home, they now have the freedom to do  whatever they like. The director concluded by urging everyone to give their total cooperation in ensuring the welfare of the children and also   relate with them in a lovely manner.

Mr. Toyin Kayode the director of child   who represented the commissioner in the ministry Mrs. Funmi Efuwape while inaugurating the committee members urges them to see themselves as agents of progress and not destruction.The committees   were advised to be good ambassadors in ensuring the rights and welfare of the street children is well protected. They were also assured that the ministry would give adequate support to   members of the committee to ensure that little children are taken off the streets.

 

    One of the children who said he has something to say was given the opportunity to talk, he identified himself as one of the street children, he  said he has a school leaving certificate,  poor condition of his home lead him to the street. He explained that most of the atrocity that do take place in Lafenwa are carried out by older thugs in the environment, but him and his friends are always been accused for the crime they know nothing about, he also said  80%  of them are being taken to the prison and foster home which made them more harden.   He appealed to the police and security agencies that they should always do proper investigation so that the innocent ones among them would no longer be taken for crimes they are not guilty of.

 Mrs. Peju Osoba the director of child first   initiative addressed the committee; she told them they are to perform their duties efficiently and effectively   towards the welfare of the street children.Mr. Olakunle Sanni the national secretary of CPN and Mr. Sholeye Akingbade the coordinator of CPN Ogun state stressed the need for protecting all children because they are the future of the nation.  A representative of Juvenile welfare Centre (JWC) appreciated Global support for kidsinitiative for inaugurating the committees   as it will also help them in their work.

At the end of the inauguration, the committee understood the reason why they should be concerned about the welfare of the street children, and they pledged to be committed to the task given to them
